The QE55QN85B is a 55 inch 4K TV from Samsung, launched in the year 2022. It features a True 10-bit IPS panel with Anti-glare/Matte finish. The max. resolution it can display is 3840 x 2160 @ 120 Hz with a pixel density of 80 ppi.
After screen size and resolution, the next most important specification of a display is its Color Reproduction Accuracy, which is defined by its color gamut specification.
The Samsung QE55QN85B is rated with a DCI P3 color profile coverage of 100%. This is equivalent to 136.36% sRGB. The color accuracy on this TV should be Lifelike!
What is Color gamut ?
Color gamut specification of a TV is the measurement of the range of colors that the TV can show.
A panel with poor color reproduction will produce undersaturated/washed out colors that will spoil your immersive experience.
It is specified in different units - sRGB(most popular), NTSC 1953, DCI P3 Adobe RGB, rec.2020. It is upto the manufacturer which one they choose.
For example, the color gamut of this TV is specified in DCI P3.
But don't worry, here is a chart that will help you choosing a TV with good color accuracy.
Now, after color gamut, the static contrast specification of a TV has equally important role in picture quality.
Understanding the static contrast ratio of a TV
There are two types of contrast specifications for a TV. Static and Dynamic. We are interested in static contrast ratio. Dynamic doesn't matter much.
Static contrast specification tells the intensity of black levels. That is, a TV with static contrast ratio < 1000:1 may produce black images something like this:
Note that, such TVs are likely be prone to backlight bleeds that will impact your experience — as shown below. The image is an example of another display, it is not this one
Think of static contrast as another dimension to details — just like resolution. To put it into perspective, a TV with low contrast ratio will produce less shades of colors, so lesser detail overall.
If given a choice, I will prefer a FHD TV with high contrast ratio over a 4K TV with low contrast ratio.
This TV is rated with a static contrast ratio of 8000:1., good enough to produce deep blacks and eye-catching visuals. For the record, it also comes with local dimming feature which is a plus.
HDR is also supported on this TV in form of HDR10, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive, HDR10+ Gaming, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) and Quantum HDR 1500.
Coming to brightness, it can go as bright as 250 nits with the help of Mini LED backlight.
If you are not planning to game on this TV, you can ignore these specifications. But if you are also going to use the TV for gaming or use it as a PC monitor, make sure to get a TV that features the lowest input lag and response time.
The input lag on this TV is 6 ms and its minimum response time is N/A. Gamers gonna love this TV.
Understanding Input lag and response time
This lag is the amount of time at which key-presses or mouse movements changes the content of your TV. Though, this won't matter much if you aren't into competitive/FPS games like call of duty.
For best of both worlds, get a TV that features an input lag and response time of less than 20ms.
Ergonomics and Dimensions
Speaking of ergonomics — If you plan to wall mount the TV, you can make use of the VESA mount provided with this TV, which by the way has an interface size of 200 x 200 mm. Swivel, Tilt or Pivot features are not supported on this unit.
Vertically, the TV measures 55 inches and horizontally 48.32 inches. In terms of thickness, it is 1 inches thick.
Overall this TV weighs approximately 20.2 kilograms (including stand). Without stand, it weighs 17.2 Kgs. So plan your space accordingly.
Hardware and Audio
The TV comes with a 4-Core CPU. However, Samsung didn't provide any info about the available RAM on this TV.
The UI on this TV is powered by Tizen 6.5 Operating System.
For display connectivity, Samsung has provided three HDMI 2.0 ports and one HDMI 2.1 port on this TV.
For connecting USB devices, you will have two USB ports. Other connectivity ports include — 1x Satellite In (Sub — F-type female), 1x Antenna (RF) (female), 1x Satellite In (F-type female), 1x CI+ 1.4 and 1x Ethernet RJ45.
