ABOUT THIS TV

LG 86QNED999QB 400x400 Image LG 86QNED999QB

The 86QNED999QB is a 86 inch 8K TV from LG, launched in the year 2022. It comes with a True 10-bit IPS panel.

The max. resolution it can achieve is 7680 x 4320 @ 120 Hz with a pixel density of 103 ppi.

Picture Quality

After screen size and resolution, the next important feature of a display that defines picture quality is its Color Gamut.

LG did not provide a color gamut rating for this TV. So we have to take a guess.

Now, since the TV features a big 86 inch screen, it won't come with a cheap panel, so here we can assume its equivalent sRGB coverage to be 90-100% or above. The color accuracy on this TV will be Lifelike! Meaning it is capable of producing color accurate images AS IT IS intended.

Understanding the Color Gamut Specification

Color gamut specification of a display indicates the range of colors that it can display.

Put Simply, this specification tells the ability of a display to produce accurate colors. A TV with low color gamut coverage will miss out on some colors (such as deep red), so the image produced will look "washed out" in colors.

It is specified in different units - sRGB(most popular), NTSC 1953, DCI P3 Adobe RGB, rec.2020. It is upto the manufacturer which one they choose.

But don't worry, below is a chart that will help you choosing a TV with good color accuracy.

Color Gamut Chart

Now, after color gamut, the static contrast specification of a TV has equally important role in picture quality.

The importance of static contrast ratio

There are two types of contrast specifications for a TV. Static and Dynamic. We are interested in static contrast ratio as dynamic doesn't matter much.

Static contrast tells the intensity of black levels. That is, a TV with SC ratio < 1000:1 may produce black images something like this:

Example of a disply with low contrast ratio

Apart from this, such TVs are likely to suffer from backlight bleeds that will affect your experience — as shown below.

Like resolution, the static contrast ratio is also equally responsible for details. To put it into perspective, a TV with low contrast ratio will produce less shades of colors, thus lesser detail overall.

If given a choice, I will prefer a FHD TV with high contrast ratio over a 4K TV with low contrast ratio.

This TV features a static contrast ratio of 10000:1., enough to produce deep blacks and eye-catching visuals. The panel comes with local dimming backlight technology which is a plus.

HDR is also supported on this TV in form of Dolby Vision, HDR10 Pro, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) and Dolby Vision IQ.

Coming to brightness, it can go as bright as 250 nits, powered by Mini LED backlight.

Gaming Performance

If you are not planning to game on this TV, you can safely ignore these specifications. But if you are also planning to use the TV for playing games or use it as a PC monitor, you should take a TV with the lowest input lag and response time.

Sadly, we cannot find the input lag specification for this unit. But since this is not a cheap TV, we can expect an input lag of less than 20ms.

What is Input lag ?

This lag is the amount of time at which inputs changes the content of the screen. Though, this won't matter much if you aren't into competitive/FPS games like call of duty.

Although for better experience, get a TV that has an input lag and response time of < 20ms.

Ergonomics and Dimensions

Coming to ergonomics — If you plan to wall mount the TV, you can make use of the VESA mount provided with this TV, which by the way has an interface size of 600 x 400 mm. The unit doesn't come with Swivel, Tilt or Pivot support.

The vertical and horizontal measurements of this TV are 75.47 inches and 46.26 inches respectively.

It is just 1.18 inches thick.

It weighs 55.4 kilograms and 3.8 kgs extra including stand. So plan your space accordingly.

Hardware and Audio

The internals of this TV is powered by 4-Core CPU. However, LG didn't provide any info on the total RAM on the TV's official specsheet.

To power its UI, the TV runs webOS 22 Operating System.

For display connectivity, there is four HDMI 2.1 ports on this TV.

To connect USB devices, it includes — 2x USB 2.0 and 1x USB 3.0. Other connectivity ports include — 1x Satellite In (Main — F-type female), 1x Antenna (RF) (female), 1x Satellite In (Sub — F-type female), 1x CI+ 1.4, 1x IR Out and 1x Ethernet RJ45.

For wireless connections on this TV, the manufacturer has provided Wi-Fi (5Ghz + 2.5Ghz), Wifi-Direct, Bluetooth 5.0 and DLNA.

Speaking of speakers, it is packaged with 4 x 10W built-in speakers. It also comes with a built-in sub-woofer. So you don't have to invest on any external sound system.

Speaking of power usage, this TV consumes 430.4 Watts on average and 0.5 Watts on standby.

It supports a power outlet of 220 V - 240 V/50 Hz - 60 Hz.
