ABOUT THIS TV

Sony KD-50X80K 400x400 Image Sony KD-50X80K

The KD-50X80K is a 50 inch 4K TV from Sony. It was launched in 2022. It features a 10-bit VA panel. The max. resolution it can achieve is 3840 x 2160 with a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a pixel density of 89 ppi.

Picture Quality

After screen size and resolution, the next most important spec of a display is its Color Reproduction Accuracy (defined by its color gamut specification).

Sony did not provide a color gamut specification for this TV. But don't worry, we have other means to guess that. Now, since the TV features amassive 50 inch screen, it won't come with a cheap panel, so here we can assume its equivalent sRGB coverage to be 90-100% or above. The color quality on this TV should be Lifelike! Meaning it is capable of producing accurate colors.

What is Color gamut ?

Color gamut specification of a TV is a measure of the range of colors that the TV can display.

A TV with poor color accuracy will produce washed out colors that will not be pretty to look at.

Different manufacturers use different units to define color gamut. Such as — sRGB, NTSC, DCI P3 Adobe RGB and rec.2020.

But you don't need to worry about that, here is a chart that will help you choosing a TV with good color accuracy.

Color Gamut Chart

Other than color accuracy, the static contrast specification of a TV has equally important role in picture quality.

What is Static Contrast ?

A TV with high enough static contrast ratio will produce natural deep blacks while a TV with low contrast ratio (<1000:1) will produce images that look muddy as shown below.

Example of a display with low contrast ratio

As you imagine, this will rob your experience considerably.

Note that, static contrast ratio and resolution go hand in hand when it comes to details. To put it into perspective, a TV with low contrast ratio will produce less shades of colors, so lesser detail overall.

If given a choice, always prefer a FHD TV with high contrast ratio over a 4K TV with low contrast ratio.

This TV is rated with a static contrast ratio of 8000:1., enough to achieve deep blacks and eye-catching visuals. For the record, it also comes with local dimming backlight technology which is a plus.

Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) are also supported on this TV.

Coming to brightness, the peak brightness it can produce is 250 nits. The panel of this TV is powered by Direct LED backlight.

Gaming Performance

If you are planning to use your TV solely for content consumption, you can safely ignore these specifications. But if you are also going to use the TV for gaming or use it as a PC monitor, you should take a TV that features the lowest input lag and response time.

Unfortunately, there is no specification for input lag on this TV. Now, as this is not a cheap TV from Sony, we can expect an input lag of less than 20ms.

What is Input lag ?

This lag is the amount of time at which device inputs changes the content of your display. Though, this won't matter much if you aren't into competitive/FPS games like call of duty.

For best of both worlds, get a TV that features an input lag and response time of less than 20ms.

Dimensions and Ergonomics

The width of this TV is 44 inches while its height is 28.19 inches.

Speaking of thickness, it is just 2.76 inches thick.

In total the TV weighs approximately 13.0 KGs (including stand). Without stand, it weighs 12.4 KGs. So plan your space accordingly.

Now, coming to ergonomics — a VESA mount with interface size of 200 x 200 mm is provided for wall-mounting. There is no Swivel, Tilt or Pivot feature support in this TV.
