ABOUT THIS TV

Philips 55PML9507/12 400x400 Image Philips 55PML9507/12

The 55PML9507/12 is a 55 inch 4K TV from Philips. It was launched in 2022. It features a True 10-bit VA panel. It can display a max resolution of 3840 x 2160 @ 120 Hz with a pixel density of 80 ppi.

Picture Quality

After screen size and resolution, the next most important feature of a display is its Color Reproduction (defined by its color gamut specification).

Speaking of which, this TV is rated with a 95% DCI P3 color gamut coverage, which is equivalent to 129.55% sRGB. The color quality on this TV should be Lifelike!

What is Color gamut ?

Color gamut spec of a TV is the measurement of the range of colors that the TV can display.

Meaning, it indicates the ability of a display to produce accurate colors. A display with low color gamut coverage will miss out on some colors (such as deep red), so the image produced will look "washed out" in colors.

It is specified in different units - sRGB,sRGB (standard RGB), NTSC, DCI P3 etc. It is upto the manufacturer which one they choose.

For example, the color gamut of this TV is specified using DCI P3.

But you don't need to worry about that, below is a chart that will help you choosing a TV with good color accuracy.

Color Gamut Chart

After color gamut, the static contrast ratio of a TV has equally important role in picture quality.

Understanding Static Contrast

A TV with high enough static contrast ratio will produce deep blacks while a TV with low contrast ratio (<1000:1) will produce images that look dusty as shown in below image.

Example of a display with low contrast ratio

As you see, this will impact your experience considerably.

Other than black levels, a TV with high constrast ratio lets you to see more details. So, resolution and static contrast ratio go hand in hand.

If given a choice, I will prefer a FHD TV with high contrast ratio over a 4K TV with low contrast ratio.

This TV is rated with a static contrast ratio of 8000:1., good enough to display deep blacks. For the record, it also comes with local dimming backlight which is a plus.

HDR is also supported on this TV in form of HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), HDR10, HDR10+, HDR and Dolby Vision.

Coming to brightness, it is can achieve a maximum luminance of 1500 nits. The backlight used on the panel is Mini LED. This amount of brightness is good enough even for a room with sun's rays in!

Gaming Performance

If you aren't interested in gaming, you can ignore these specs. But if you are also going to use the TV for playing games or use it as a PC monitor, you would want to take a TV with the lowest input lag and response time.

Sadly, we cannot find the input lag specification for this unit. But since this is not a cheap TV from Philips, we can expect an input lag of less than 20ms.

What is Input lag ?

This lag is the latency at which your key-presses or mouse movements changes the content of your TV. For casual Non-FPS games, input lag doesn't matter much.

But ideally, look for a TV that features an input lag and response time of less than 20ms.

Dimensions and Ergonomics

The vertical and horizontal measurements of this TV are 49 inches and 29.46 inches respectively. In total, it weighs 17.5 kgs.

Now, coming to ergonomics — If you plan to wall mount the TV, you can make use of the VESA mount provided with this TV, which by the way has an interface size of 300 x 300 mm. The unit doesn't come with Swivel, Tilt or Pivot support.

Hardware and Audio

The chipset of this TV is powered by a 4-Core CPU and its available RAM is 4 GB.

To power its UI, the TV runs Android 11 Operating System.

For display connectivity, there are two HDMI 2.0 ports and two HDMI 2.1 ports on this TV.

To connect USB devices, you have — 2x USB 2.0 and 1x USB 3.0. Other connectivity ports include — 1x Satellite In (Main — F-type female), 1x Antenna (RF) (female), 1x CI+ and 1x Ethernet RJ45.

For wireless connectivity on this TV, the manufacturer has provided a 5Ghz Wi-Fi, 2.5 Ghz Wi-Fi, Wifi-Direct and Bluetooth.

The Audio unit of this TV is powered by 2 x 20W speakers. It also comes with a built-in subwoofer. So you may not have to invest on any external sound system.

Now, coming to power usage, on average, this TV consumes about 113.28 watts and on standby, it uses 0.3 watts.
