MSI Optix MAG342CQPV 400x400 Image MSI Optix MAG342CQPV

Launched in the year 2022, the MSI Optix MAG342CQPV is a 34" WQHD Monitor from MSI. It comes with a 10-bit Curved VA panel with Anti-glare/Matte (3H) finish.

Picture Quality

Now, the next important specification of a Display that impacts picture quality is its Color Gamut.

Speaking of which, this monitor comes with 86% DCI P3 color gamut coverage. FYI, this is equivalent to 117.27% sRGB. The color quality on this monitor will be Lifelike! Apart from giving you a truly world-class experience, this display is also ideal for professionals who are into photo editing or color grading business.

Understanding the Color Gamut Specification

Color gamut specification of a display indicates the range of colors that the monitor can display.

In layman terms, it tells the ability of a display to produce accurate colors. A panel with low color gamut coverage will miss out on some colors (such as deep red), thus producing a "washed out" picture.

Different manufacturers use different measurement standards to define color gamut. Viz — sRGB (standard RGB), NTSC, DCI P3 etc.

For example, the color gamut of this Monitor is specified in DCI P3.

But don't worry, below is a chart that you can use to choose a Monitor with good color accuracy.

Other than color accuracy, the static contrast of a monitor also impacts its picture quality.

What is Static Contrast ratio ?

There are two types of contrast specifications for a Display. Static and Dynamic. We are interested in static contrast ratio. Dynamic doesn't matter much.

Static contrast tells the intensity of black levels. That is, a Display with SC ratio < 1000:1 may produce black images something like this:

Example of a disply with low contrast ratio

Moreover, such Displays may suffer from backlight bleeds that will affect your experience — as shown below.

Also, a Display with high constrast ratio enables you to see more details. So, resolution and static contrast ratio go hand in hand.

If given a choice, always prefer a FHD Display with high contrast ratio over a 4K Display with low contrast ratio.

This display comes with a static contrast ratio of 3000 : 1, well enough to display deep blacks and eye-catching visuals.

As for brightness, it is can achieve a peak luminance of 250 nits with the help of W-LED backlight.

Gaming Performance

Now if you need a display primarily for gaming, make sure to take a Monitor with lowest input lag and response times.

Sadly, we cannot find the input lag specification for this unit.

Now, VA panels in general are infamous for high input lags and response times. So, the input lag on this Display could be above 20ms. Though, there's no concern for playability of casual or Non-FPS games on it.

What is Input Lag and Why it matters ?

This lag is the amount of time at which key-presses or mouse movements changes the content of your Monitor. For casual Non-FPS games, input lag doesn't matter much.

Although for better experience, get a Display that has an input lag and response time of less than 20ms.

Ergonomics and Dimensions

Now, speaking of ergonomics — a VESA mount with interface size of 75 x 75 mm is provided for wall-mounting. It also supports Swivel and Tilt, however there is no support for Pivot.

The width of this Display is 31.89 inches while its height is 16.54 inches ( adjustable upto 3.54 in ).

Overall it weighs 6.91 kgs (including stand). Without stand, it weighs 5.11 kgs.

For display connectivity, there are one DisplayPort 1.2 port, one HDMI 1.4 port and one HDMI 2.0 port on this Monitor.

USB ports are not provided on this unit.

Now, coming to power usage, the monitor consumes 48.86 watts on average and 0.5 watts on standby.

For powering this unit, you'll require either a 110V or 220V outlet @ 50Hz-60Hz.
